EDM consulting for the Renault F1 Team

After a first consulting assignment based on intranet portal solutions, Renault F1 once again chose Smile for a support assignment in its implementation of the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) tool, Alfresco.

For the project, the Renault F1 Team’s technical staff had already planned to use the Alfresco solution, because of its special advantages, particularly its standards-based architecture and its functional coverage. Thomas, an ECM Consultant at Smile, first analyzed the company’s requests, to determine the types of solutions to be investigated. The main objectives concerned the optimization of Alfresco’s graphic interface, the automation of dialogue with office automation tools, remote access to the document reference system for the track teams (during Grand Prix races) and the implementation of a first contract management workflow.

Following this requirements analysis, Smile created a prototype to demonstrate the added value of an ECM approach to the Renault F1 Team. The next phases of the project involved the implementation of document organization (a filing plan and a conservation policy), the automation of several business management workflows and change support for the teams.

This strategic project for the company aims to open the way to the electronic management of exchanges, both with regard to documents (EDM) and processes (BPM). Smile was involved in:

  • technically validating the choice of solution
  • determining how to meet certain specific user expectations
  • checking whether it would be possible to adapt the solution’s ergonomics
  • supporting project kick-off

It should be noted that Alfresco enables the management of both non-structured documents (MS Office, PDF and image files, etc.) and structured content (product datasheets, catalogues, etc.) and the application of workflows and rights management in a standardized way. Renault F1 will integrate the tool for launch to its teams in France and England and on F1 racetracks around the world.
